When a lift is raised or lowered by Wire Ropes, Belts or Chains that are connected to an electric motor, then this is referred to as a Traction Drive. The motor can be situated above the lift (Top Drive), at the bottom of the installation (Bottom Drive or Inverse Traction) or in a cabinet alongside the landing door at the upper level served.
